Amanda King Sugar Free Red Velvet Cupcakes

Last night I made sugar free red velvet cupcakes for my husband's birthday (and some reduced sugar too). I used a sugar free Sweet'N Low chocolate cake mix and then the Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Devil's Food cake mix to make more. Instead of adding one bottle of red food coloring to bo… Continue

Amanda King Diabetes tattoo?

Travis' post about a Diabetes tattoo really got me thinking: (1) about getting a similar type of tattoo and (2) about wearing a medical alert bracelet I've known I've had Diabetes for 5 months now (May, 2009). I'm mostly regulated now because of diet (mostly consistent), exercise (sometimes consistent), and pills (Metformin). I recently had my first taste of Diabete… Continue

Lindsey Vitamin D

Lately, I've heard a lot about how vitamin D deficiency is some of the leading causes of major diseases. Diabetes being one of them. Last year, I found out that my vitamin D levels were deficient, although I have no idea for how long. So I began taking supplements (much more than the government recommends) and only a year into it saw any results. Now my vitamin D is increased, but still not out of the deficient range. I know that increasing my vitamin D level won't reverse diabetes, although i… Continue

Gathoni Kamau The issue of control

Right when I was first diagnosed I remember my endo kept telling me 'you must control your sugars' You must be in control of yourself' everywhere I looked there was this word 'control'. Everytime diabetes came up control was like its ugly twin sister. I have spent so much time trying to find this 'control' that my endo kept talking about. 9 years later I was exhausted. In my pursuit of control I had completely lost my mind. I had somehow thought that I could control my diabetes and tell it when… Continue

Lindsey Pump Breaks

So I decided to take a little break from the pump today. I stopped my basals this morning and took an injection of Lantus. So far, it's been very blah. I've run between 220-250 the entire time, despite boluses. I started with a small amount of Lantus for myself though (10 units), which is exactly why...so I'm actually impressed that I'm only 220-250. I decided to take the break because my infusion sites were getting extremely sensitive and I just wanted to get it off of me for awhile. I'm not… Continue

Kate Banks Diabetes Conference

On Wednesday, my diabetes nurse took me and five other girls from my clinic to Dublin to attend a conference for Teenagers from the age of 14 who have Type 1 Diabetes. A selected 70 teenagers from all over The Republic of Ireland attended, and in the second part of the day, some parents came to the review of the conference. When we got there, we signed in and got name badges, and were split into seperate groups and each group had to attend separate work shops. Then we walked around and had aContinue

Lindsey T-Shirt and Logo Ideas!!!

Hey guys! Echoes is looking for t-shirt and logo ideas! The t-shirts will be a basic color with basic print (since we're still on limited funds!). The back of the shirt will say Diabetic Echoes. But we need a slogan, catch phrase, or some sort of mantra for the front of the shirt. It should be catchy. It can be funny, but that's not a requirement. We also need logo ideas. I'd like to have the central focus as a globe with some reference to the term "Echoes" in the logo. Looking forward to yo… Continue

Lindsey Doctor's Kinda Stink

I had my endo check up appointment today (my dad and I both did actually). Usually, it goes okay. But today wasn't okay at all. I left feeling so beaten. Their A1c machine has been broken the last year, so I usually have to wait 3 weeks to get my A1c results unless I decide to go into the doctor early (which never really happens). Today, they told me that the machine was fixed. I was excited to know that I'd get my A1c without the wait. The nurse did the usual routine: weight, medications, hei… Continue

M. (for now!) Inaugural Bawl (or Diabetic Recession)

On Tuesday, I was fortunate enough to attend President Obama’s inauguration. Unlike the noble and highly activism-oriented folks I traveled with, I had very little to do with the president’s election until, oh, a week before everyone cast their ballots. At this point, in my typical fashion, I decided– last-minute– that I wanted in on the action. For me, some of the most moving moments came the night before the president’s swearing-in. My hosts took me to a real-live celebration party where peop… Continue

Kate Banks Diabetes and High School

When I was diagnosed, I was the only person in my school with Type 1 Diabetes. At the time there were 400 students attending my school and 70 teachers. When we went in to tell the Principal about my diagnosis, she was very understanding and agreed to let me do what I needed, when I needed, and made sure my teachers knew this too. Most of the staff and my peers were receptive and let me do what I needed and left me to do my own thing. At first, being the only diabetic in the school didn’t really… Continue

M. (for now!) Days (or Daze) at the Hospital

Last Sunday, I wound up at the ER. I’d woken up in the morning, eaten half a piece of vegan banana bread, threw it all up, had diahrrea, drank lots of fluids but wasn’t able to urinate. The idea of taking in any more food turned my stomach and summoned the gag reflex, so I fell asleep soon after I’d gotten up. I woke up in the fetal position, weak, headachy, fingers and toes tingling and FREEZING. My roomate promptly unlocked our front door, walked in from her adventures in the outside world and… Continue

M. (for now!) Quitting Symlin (or, the Appetizer Suppressant!)

While at a program for diabetics in Arizona recently (Lifestyle Center of America; more on that in another post), I was placed on an injected drug called Symlin. Symlin is a drug that simulates something in a healthy pancreas called Amalyn (Amalin?), and from what I understand, Amalyn works to slow the rates of gastric emptying and even out post-meal blood glucose in non-diabetics. Symlin is a synthetic drug made to do the same, but it is not a perfect surrogate. It didn’t do very much for stabi… Continue

M. (for now!) Sick Days

*Note: I'll be importing some blog posts from my personal blog to this site. I hope everyone finds them interesting and can relate!* Lately, my immediate goal is to be able to stay out of bed for a full 8-10 hours straight. As it stands, I can barely stay awake throughout the day and even catching a taxi to one of my endless doctors’ appointments seems like an intense exertion. Lately, the problem in achieving weight loss for me is not determination or will power; it’s illness. Even I have a h… Continue

Lindsey Wisdom Teeth

I went to the dentist today to learn that my gums are inflamed around my bottom molars. Last year, they told me I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. The sooner, the better. But no major issues at the moment. But a few weeks ago, I had some pain. And now the gum inflammation. So I decided to put off putting off. I'm getting them out TOMORROW! I'm particularly freaked. I've never been under general anesthesia, and never wanted to do it. It scares me, it worries me, it makes me want to scream or r… Continue

Lindsey New Year, New Habits

So 2009 came in with a big bang. I can't believe we are already a week in...this year is going to fly by! Since it's the New Year and resolutions are in order, I decided to post some of mine. I'm trying to be more specific this year instead of just doing the general "Eat better, exercise more, etc" resolutions. Here's the list: 1) Start out walking (and build up to jogging and running) at least 2 days a week (then 3, then 4, then 5). I'm planning for Mondays and Wednesdays at the moment. 2) E… Continue

Lindsey JDRF Community

So JDRF has launched and made public their new community for Type 1's, specifically young adults and teens. It's called Juvenation and it's pretty darn cool. So far membership is fairly small, although it's still got a lot of the "names" from the Diabetes OC. Definitely go check it out as Echoes wants to support every major diabetes community! Look me up under member name: Lindsey. Continue
