Vitamin D

Lately, I've heard a lot about how vitamin D deficiency is some of the leading causes of major diseases. Diabetes being one of them. Last year, I found out that my vitamin D levels were deficient, although I have no idea for how long. So I began taking supplements (much more than the government recommends) and only a year into it saw any results. Now my vitamin D is increased, but still not out of the deficient range. I know that increasing my vitamin D level won't reverse diabetes, although i… Continue

Pump Breaks

So I decided to take a little break from the pump today. I stopped my basals this morning and took an injection of Lantus. So far, it's been very blah. I've run between 220-250 the entire time, despite boluses. I started with a small amount of Lantus for myself though (10 units), which is exactly why...so I'm actually impressed that I'm only 220-250. I decided to take the break because my infusion sites were getting extremely sensitive and I just wanted to get it off of me for awhile. I'm not… Continue

Let's Raise for a Cure!

Hey guys! The JDRF Promise Ball in Houston is right around the corner! The local Echoes group is currently raising money to attend, which means that all that money will go straight to finding a cure for type 1! You can help raise money as well! We're currently doing a letter campaign (see my Dlife blog for an example of a fundraising letter!) that you can take part in too! (All donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!) All JDRF checks can be mailed to the Houston, TX chapter, or better yet...raise mone… Continue

T-Shirt and Logo Ideas!!!

Hey guys! Echoes is looking for t-shirt and logo ideas! The t-shirts will be a basic color with basic print (since we're still on limited funds!). The back of the shirt will say Diabetic Echoes. But we need a slogan, catch phrase, or some sort of mantra for the front of the shirt. It should be catchy. It can be funny, but that's not a requirement. We also need logo ideas. I'd like to have the central focus as a globe with some reference to the term "Echoes" in the logo. Looking forward to yo… Continue

Doctor's Kinda Stink

I had my endo check up appointment today (my dad and I both did actually). Usually, it goes okay. But today wasn't okay at all. I left feeling so beaten. Their A1c machine has been broken the last year, so I usually have to wait 3 weeks to get my A1c results unless I decide to go into the doctor early (which never really happens). Today, they told me that the machine was fixed. I was excited to know that I'd get my A1c without the wait. The nurse did the usual routine: weight, medications, hei… Continue

Wisdom Teeth

I went to the dentist today to learn that my gums are inflamed around my bottom molars. Last year, they told me I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. The sooner, the better. But no major issues at the moment. But a few weeks ago, I had some pain. And now the gum inflammation. So I decided to put off putting off. I'm getting them out TOMORROW! I'm particularly freaked. I've never been under general anesthesia, and never wanted to do it. It scares me, it worries me, it makes me want to scream or r… Continue

New Year, New Habits

So 2009 came in with a big bang. I can't believe we are already a week in...this year is going to fly by! Since it's the New Year and resolutions are in order, I decided to post some of mine. I'm trying to be more specific this year instead of just doing the general "Eat better, exercise more, etc" resolutions. Here's the list: 1) Start out walking (and build up to jogging and running) at least 2 days a week (then 3, then 4, then 5). I'm planning for Mondays and Wednesdays at the moment. 2) E… Continue

JDRF Community

So JDRF has launched and made public their new community for Type 1's, specifically young adults and teens. It's called Juvenation and it's pretty darn cool. So far membership is fairly small, although it's still got a lot of the "names" from the Diabetes OC. Definitely go check it out as Echoes wants to support every major diabetes community! Look me up under member name: Lindsey. Continue

JDRF Walk to Find a Cure

Today was my first JDRF Walk. It was quite exciting. Tons of fun and a great experience. I had three other walkers turn out of my five pledged. Out of those five and myself, we raised over $700 US that will directly go to finding a cure. I'm so amazed at how much a little sweat and determination can get you. The walk was a 5k, which we completed in about an hour. There were water stops every few hundred feet with bananas and apples to tide people over. At the end of the route, there was a stag… Continue

Echoes Guidelines

Since Echoes is growing and getting mentioned across the web, we are experiencing the unfortunate side effects of increased membership. I want to personally apologize for any and all Spam related material that has been mentioned or sent out through the Echoes network. In light of recent events, Echoes is taking the time to mention that we are still a member oriented network that will not tolerate abuse of our system. A "Terms of Use" and "Guidelines" page will be uploaded to the site within th… Continue

Diabetes and Dating

Diabetes is an every day disease. It becomes an integrated part of everything in your life, from schedules to clothes to significant others. Here are a few tips on dating and diabetes: 1) Diabetes should always come first: Sometimes guys/girls won't understand how important diabetes is in your life. They won't get that you have to check your blood sugar in the middle of a date or disconnect your pump before certain activities. When they don't, your diabetes should always have priority o… Continue
